is usually characterized by chronic airway inflammation and can occur both in children and in adults. Constantly inflamed air passages are prone to particularly strong reactions. They can constrict, which restricts the airflow and causes symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath.
Asthma can be triggered by infections, allergens, medication, emotional stress, tobacco smoke, chemical substances and physical strain.
COPD is short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The main symptoms of this chronic inflammation are chronic cough, with or without sputum production, and insidious shortness of breath.
COPD is one of the most common diseases worldwide. It is characterized by an increasing reduction of the patient’s breathing capacity. It is important for the COPD diagnosis to be made at an early stage and treatment to be commenced immediately in order to halt the progressive and irreversible damage to the lungs.
A child’s lungs are particularly vulnerable to disorders and infections. Coughs, wheezing or shortness of breath can occur in children of all ages and are usually treated with inhaler devices containing medication.
I provide medical treatment for children starting from the age of six years.
Prior to many surgical procedures, an examination of your lung health is required. This includes examinations which can be performed in my practice as well as an up-to-date chest X-ray. You can have the chest X-ray performed beforehand and bring it along for your examination, or I can refer you to an institute of radiology. After you have been cleared for surgery, you will receive a written report to be presented at the hospital.
Allergies are excessive defensive reactions of the immune system against certain, usually harmless, environmental substances which can cause asthmatic complaints. There are allergies against pollen, grasses, medication, food, animal hair, fruit, plastics and house dust mites and many other substances. Diagnosing potential allergies is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of bronchial asthma.
The diagnosis is made in special laboratories or by means of a skin test.
Snoring, observed breathing interruptions, daytime sleepiness and nodding off involuntarily can be symptoms of a sleep-related respiratory disorder. The diagnosis is made by performing a medical sleep examination and a cardiorespiratory polysomnography.
Please let us know in advance that you will need a sleep examination. So we are able to prepare the sleep monitor for you.
Fee: 260€ (includes the first-visit, sleep measurement, analysis and discussion of the results)
The various consequences of a sleep-related respiratory disorder, none of which should be underestimated, include a reduced fitness to drive, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, diabetes and an increased risk of a heart attack, among many others. On the other hand, blood pressure disorders can also be an indication of a sleep-related respiratory disorder.
Not every nodule or tumor that is discovered in the lungs is malign. The term ‘tumor’ is an umbrella term for the proliferation of tissue. If an X-ray or a computer tomography shows any anomalies, the next important steps are an extensive conversation about possible diagnoses and a targeted approach to the diagnostic procedure.
The lung function examination is a simple and painless procedure. The patient breathes into a pulmonary function testing device which records and analyzes the flow values. This is how restrictions of the airways or a reduced respiratory flow volume can be diagnosed.
Fractional Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a quantitative, non-invasive and simple method of measuring airway inflammation that provides a complementary tool to other established methods of assessing airways disease in asthma patients.
The oxygen content in your blood can be measured quickly and painlessly with a measuring device. A clip is fastened to your finger and the measurement result appears a few seconds later.
The most common examination in a check-up with your pulmonologist is an overview X-ray of the chest in two planes. If this examination is required, you will be referred to an institute of radiology. This is an uncomplicated matter and can be done on short notice.
Subsequent examinations such as a computer tomography or a magnetic resonance tomography can also be performed this way.
There is no x-ray device in my office.
Blood can be sampled either in my practice or in a laboratory you are referred to. Please note that some blood analyses require the blood draw to be performed in a laboratory, which ensures rapid processing of the sample. This primarily concerns immunological analyses.
Changing our lifestyle is not always easy. Reducing or ceasing tobacco smoke inhalation is particularly beneficial for your health. This is why there are several therapeutic options today for successfully abandoning tobacco consumption and its negative accompanying effects.
These include various nicotine substitutes, drug therapy, as well as psychological and medical assistance.
PrEP is short for pre-exposure prophylaxis, a protective measure which, when used correctly, is highly effective in preventing HIV infection. Protection is achieved by consistently taking one tablet every day.
If you wish to find out more about PrEP or wonder whether PrEP is useful for you, I am happy to advise you in my practice. Arrange an appointment for your individual PrEP consultation at +43 1 5030888.
Please bring your vaccination card.
In medicine, a distinction is made between genetically determined (primary) and acquired (secondary) immunodeficiencies. To find out whether a patient suffers from a genetically determined immunodeficiency, blood tests in specialized laboratories are available. Acquired immunodeficiencies, such as an infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), lead to the progressive destruction of the immune system. This makes the human body more susceptible to particularly severe diseases which rarely or never occur in persons with a healthy immune system.
